Our now President and Secretary formed Thornes Junior Football Club in October 1990; with sixteen boys playing friendly matches that season. The 8th of September 1991 saw the first competitive match in the Garforth Junior Football League at under eleven. Easter 1992 brought a visit of young footballers from S.U.S. Merklinde based at Wakefield's twin town in Germany, Castrop Rauxel. This became an annual event with our under eleven’s and twelve’s boys traveling to Germany every other year.
After four years of a gypsy existence, moving from ground to ground, school to school, we found our home ground at Queens Drive, which consists of three F.A. recommended mini soccer, two three quarter and three full size pitches, on an ex landfill site, with inherent drainage problems. A great deal of money and hard work has been put into temporary buildings on site, these consist of a tuck shop, (with the best bacon sandwiches at any football ground in the country on a Sunday morning) a toilet block, 2 double changing rooms, one with showers, one with a referees room, and one store room which holds mini posts, nets and flags to fulfill every pitch if all required at the same time. The toilet block is the second one we have converted, the first one was stolen. When the police were informed they said they had nothing to go on, and neither had we!
In 1992 the club consisted of approx. 100 members, in 1995 the club had increased its membership to approx. 180. To date the club boasts in excess of 300 playing members between six and open age, with the six to ten year olds playing mini soccer and teams from under elevens to under sixteen's playing in the local Charles Rice and West Riding girls leagues. An open age side was formed in August 1998 with the majority of the side coming from boys who started with the club at 10 and 11 years of age. Open age teams now boast two on Sundays and one on a Saturday. Hopefully our girl’s team will soon progress to be a ladies team.
Our roll of honour to date shows our continued progress. We are also very proud of many of our players, who are now with League clubs in their Schools of excellence/academies.
Many League Championships and Cups have been won over the years and the club is very proud of those achievements. There are however three outstanding honours which cannot pass without a mention.
